Last International Women’s Day, I celebrated by sharing my story with you.
Since then, it's felt like every day has been International Women's Day, as women across the world increasingly shared their stories and fought to get their voices heard. #MeToo
It sparked a conversation that — while I wish these stories never occurred in the first place — I'm glad is happening. The courage to share these stories gives us the opportunity to finally feel like we're not alone, inevitably empowering us to rise stronger together. As Brené Brown said,
“Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never weakness.”
There's power in vulnerability and it seems to be just what we need in order for real change to take place. While there's still a long way to go towards closing the gender gap, our momentum is getting stronger and stronger. And there's no going back now!
So whether you're celebrating IWD2018 by challenging stereotypes and biases, forging positive visibility of women, celebrating women's achievements, or any of the other actions outlined in the #PressForProgress campaign, I invite you to also be vulnerable and share your story. It could be just what someone else needs to hear in order to ignite more necessary change.
If you need some inspiration, here are some of my favorite powerful words from courageous women all throughout history:
"I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that will affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men." — Emma Watson
“Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a new pie.” ~ Gloria Steinem
"I feel like young girls are told that they have to be a princess and fragile. It's bullsh*t. I identify much more with being a warrior — a fighter. If I was going to be a princess, I'd be a warrior princess. Definitely." — Emma Watson
“To all the little girls who are watching, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams." — Hillary Clinton in her 2016 concession speech
“I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naïve or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman.” — Anaïs Nin
"Don't let anyone tell you you're weak because you're a woman." — Mary Kom, World Boxing Champion
“Why do people say “grow some balls?” Balls are weak and sensitive. If you wanna be tough, grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding.” — Betty White
“Remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels.” — Faith Whittlesey
